A new collection of undershirts promising to “revolutionise the male physique” will be available from Selfridges stores from March 2.

The £50 vests work in the same way that control pants – made famous by film actress Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones - suck in wobbly thighs and bottoms.

Designed by Equmen, the Core Precision Undershirts claim to “create a leaner, smoother silhouette” and improve posture by supporting core muscles.

But experts have warned that the control vests should not be used a substitute for exercise or a good diet.

Carl Ellis, personal trainer at Fitness First, told Express.co.uk: “A control vest is a great idea for a sleeker outline on a special night out or for an important interview but there is no substitute for regular exercise and a healthy diet to give you a more toned look 24 hours a day. 

“Although if you like your shape in one of these vests the image has to be a great incentive to make it real.’’

Britain’s spiralling obesity epidemic has sent cases of Type 2 diabetes – which is directly linked to obesity - soaring by almost three quarters in just six years.

A recent study shows that the illness is 29 per cent more common in men than women and rates are increasing faster than in North America, fat capital of the world.
