In a revealing interview the Babyshambles frontman said he was constantly pining for his father, an army major also named Peter, who in 2005 vowed never to see his son until he was clean of drugs.

Doherty, 29, who was born in Hexham, Northumberland and grew up in several army garrisons, said he still hopes for a reconciliation despite his failure to kick drugs.[>

“I’m coping mostly and I’m mostly clean, I won’t lie to you it is a struggle,” he said. “My dad and I are estranged. In his mind if I’m still using in any way then I’m not his son. But my mum speaks to me secretly.[>

“I try and wrap myself up enough so that it doesn’t get to me and I don’t feel anything but really of course it gets to me. I love the man and I grew up kind of idolising him.[>

“It’s breaking my heart that for him the be-all and end-all of our relationship is whether or not there’s something despicable in my bloodstream.”[>

Doherty, former lead singer of The Libertines, is notorious for his drug problems and recently served a prison sentence after breaching bail terms.[>

He and his father briefly reconciled in 2007 when Pete was fresh out of the Priory Clinic but a relapse put an end to their truce.[>

“I’d love to just go to football with him like we used to or just go for a drink and be a son and him a father,” added the singer, whose destructive heroin and crack cocaine addictions inspired his mother Jacqueline to write the book Pete Doherty: My Prodigal Son. [>

“He saw it as a complete betrayal and that I was upsetting my mum, my nan and my sisters. He saw it as selfish.”[>

Pete also said he is aware that his drug use has overtaken his music but that he wants to change that. “I’ve got a deep rooted determination to write great songs,” he conceded. “I’d like to imprint a melody, a song in people’s heads and have that as how they think of me.”[>
