Be a pass master

REVISION is the key to exam success and a formal course can be an excellent way of preparing for A-level and GCSE exams.

Easter revision courses run by schools, colleges and specialist providers, offer pupils up to two weeks of intensive study during the holidays.

Increasingly these have been extended to regular weekend revision courses, reflecting the importance that students now place on securing the grades they need for the next stage of their education.

Revision courses provide an opportunity to identify and focus on any problem areas, and while many programmes include a full range of subjects, others focus on more specific areas of study.

Excel In Science runs revision courses every Saturday, as well as an Easter revision programme, for GCSE, AS and A2-level students in key subjects such as mathematics, English, physics, chemistry and biology.

As well as covering the actual syllabus, students are taught to improve their examination technique.

The classes, which take place at City University and Greenwich University in London, are for 13 to 19-year-olds, who work in groups of around 10 taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers.

Because courses are organised and fairly intensive, students feel they are making better use of their time compared with revising at home.

Gerald Hattee is principal of Collingham, an independent GCSE and sixth form college based in London, which has been running revision courses for many years.

He said: "The courses are carefully structured to help pupils to focus their mind and develop a disciplined approach to their exam preparation."
