UK NEWSMAYOR RALLIES TO CELEBRATE ST GEORGE
PATRIOTIC PLANS: Boris Johnson Monday March 23,2009 By Michael PickardENGLAND should mark St George’s Day with nationwide events, London Mayor Boris Johnson said yesterday.
Mr Johnson plans a week-long St George’s festival and will fly the red and white flag from City Hall on the saint’s day, April 23, after he admitted that the capital had ignored the occasion for far too long.
Cities up and down the country are also set to mark the occasion, from a parade and market displaying English food and gifts in Manchester, to live music in central Birmingham.
English Heritage has also organised events, including dragon trails and medieval pageants across England.
John Midgley, co-founder of the Campaign Against Political Correctness, said Mr Johnson’s plans were a victory for common sense.
HAVE YOUR SAY: SHOULD ST GEORGE'S DAY BE A NATIONAL CELEBRATION?
He said: “It’s a refreshing change that someone of authority has got the guts to celebrate England’s patron saint and all that goes with it, instead of marginalising St George’s Day in the name of political correctness.”
Graham Smith, campaign organiser for the St George Unofficial Bank Holiday group, was delighted that London was making more of an effort to celebrate the day.
“It’s fantastic news,” he said. “There has always been some confusion with the English about identity. For decades, if not centuries, we have been programmed to believe we are British and the English identity has been subdued. But with the devolution of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and greater awareness of their identities, I think the English are beginning to realise the whole idea of being British is crumbling.”
In recent years, St George’s Day events have been played down or cancelled as organisers risked upsetting ethnic minorities. Sandwell Council in the West Midlands performed a U-turn last month when it agreed a St George’s Day parade could go ahead, after initially cancelling it when a councillor claimed it was racist and would create a “tribal” atmosphere.
Last year, a children’s parade in Bradford was scrapped as it would have taken them through two streets at the centre of race riots in 2001.
Also last year, the Department for Culture revealed it had spent just £230 promoting St George’s Day over the previous five years.
Mayor Johnson said: “St George’s Day has been ignored in London for far too long but I’m truly pleased to announce some fantastic events to mark this occasion.”
*George was a Roman soldier beheaded in modern-day Turkey in 303 for his Christian beliefs.

GOOD OLD BORIS

I fully agree with "Proud to be Welsh" as an Englishman living in Wales it is so refreshing to see my Welsh friends happily wave the flag and celebrate their Welshness. We English however, cannot wave our flag and celebrate our Englishness in our own country as it is racist and may offend ethnic minorities.

FREEDOM DAY

I think a new Bank Holiday is needed. It should be an annual celebration held every year to celebrate the next election, the day that Britaijn is feed from the tyranny of this appalling corrupt and despicable government.
Now that really will be a moment to celebrate.

PROUD TO BE WELSH

The English do suffer from a lack of national pride. Pride of being Welsh or Scottish is encouraged (although why anyone would admit to coming from the same country as Gordon Brown amazes me), but show pride in being English and the politically correct brigade start yelling racism and islamaphobia.
Its high time the English shoed the same pride, celebrated their heritage, and told the pc brigade where to go. If imigrants object to it, them clearly they dont want or intend to integrate, and should be deported immediately.
Come on England. Show some backbone. Put two fingers up to the cancer that infests this country, and be proud of your country.

Mayor Boris you've gone up a few points in my estimation, you should lead a campaign for St Georges day to become a national bank holiday.Let's hope that other councils will fly the flag of England on their civic buildings and the church of England will show just where their loyalties are by also flying the flag.God Save the Queen and St George.
