Blogging to replace history in schools

CHILDREN may soon be learning about social networking sites, online blogging and popular internet websites instead of history, it emerged last night.

Could Twitter and Facebook soon be on the curriculum Could Twitter and Facebook soon be on the curriculum?

Proposals to overhaul the primary school curriculum could see a greater focus on modern media - at the expense of traditional teaching about geography and history.

The plans, set out by Sir Jim Rose, the former director of inspection at Ofsted, could see children up to the age of 11 being taught about the website Twitter and online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Teachers would reportedly have more freedom to chose what their pupils learn and would not be required to teach about the Second World War or the Victorians.

Instead focus would be on using the internet and environmental issues.

Last night Schools Minister Jim Knight said: "Sir Jim Rose's report has not been completed let alone published yet.

We're working with experts to free up the curriculum in a way that teachers have asked.

"But British history has and always will be a core part of education."
