UK NEWSSTUDENT ARRESTED...FOR BEING HONESTThursday April 2,2009 By Chris RichesAN HONEST student who handed in a mobile phone he found was stunned when police arrested him for theft.
Paul Leicester, 18, played the Good Samaritan when he discovered the handset lying in the street. He rang the last number dialled and told a friend of the owner he would leave the phone at a nearby police station. But officers arrested him for “theft by finding”, held him for four hours and took a DNA sample. Yesterday Paul said: “I thought I was doing the right thing and had it thrown back in my face. I wouldn’t go to the police in future. All I was doing was the honest thing. It was a shocking experience.” The A-level student at Southport College, Merseyside, had been out celebrating his 18th birthday last month when he found the phone. Paul added: “Being arrested isn’t a good way to celebrate your birthday. What are you supposed to do when you find a phone?” Merseyside Police dropped the case but Paul’s father Vinnie, 37, of Seaforth, Merseyside, is still angry over his arrest. He said: “It should never have happened. Paul’s mum and I brought him up the right way. They should give him an apology.” Chief Superintendent Ian Pilling said: “We are reviewing the circumstances of the arrest.”

STUDENT ARRESTED FOR BEING HONEST

That was a shocking article to read. What a way to handle an honest case. Have not the police being trained to identify a good person and a bad person when they see one. Shameful example, in the future, no one would dare to do the right thing when they learn how foolishly the police take action. It seems that the police thinks everyone except them are bad people. It proves that the citizens are not safe under their defense system. It is a human rights violation what they have done and an unforgivable act. They must definitely apologies to Paul at least to encourage the others to act rationally when they see a crime in order to redeem nasty things that are happening to all of us.

It is nice to know that the US isn't the only country where the police departments are full of hyper-aggressive macho he-man types who wouldn't know a real crime if it bit them in the bum.

I wonder if this is the same police department who formed a task force on j walking and successfuly arrested 9 old ladies? If that was my son arrested for being honest, the only part making headlines would be the coward cop getting his sorry **** kicked and the pathetic chief resigning! Actually I think I will use this story in part for my next book. It takes place in a small town and I need a stupid cop for one of my characters. Sorry about the crudeness but i'm Author EJ Hartman and I call it as I see it!

If I would be the father for this young gentleman, whom represented honesty I would probably sue the Police Department as a whole and would start an action against the arresting police officer for defamation of character. The police department responsibility to protect property and people to maintain and enforcing the law. I really do not see the criteria and the application of the law arresting someone whom put the time and effort to locate the rightful owner of a cell phone in stad of change teh SIM CARD and keep the phone regardless how INEXPENSIVE THAT PHONE was found.

SKIP THE POLICE

I've had to pick up a lost cell phone 3 times (twice it was me, I dropped it on my bus, and once it was my son, who dropped it on our street on his way to school) All three times, the person who found it phoned me and I went to their place of business to pick up the phone. I really appreciated the thoughtfulness of all involved and no reward was ever asked for. The police aren't lost and found, if you're not scared of someone coming to where you work (in the downstairs lobby let's say), it's easier to just return it yourself.
