Margaret’s frugal flights
PRINCE WILLIAM, it emerges, isn’t the first royal to fly economy class.
His great-aunt Princess Margaret was skilled at saving pennies by sitting with hoi polloi on flights to her annual spring break on Mustique.
Security considerations meant that the Princess, flying “incognito” as Mrs Brown, avoided getting too near the great unwashed since no one was allowed to sit on the row in front or behind her. Then, safely above Heathrow, a genuflecting steward would appear at her side to offer an upgrade.
“Ma’am, with the Captain’s compliments, would you care to come to First Class for a glass of champagne?”
To which Margaret would respond: “No but I’ll come for a glass of whisky.”
Thankfully the aircraft galleys were always well stocked with her favourite Famous Grouse as a precautionary measure.
