DO YOU SPEND YOUR LIFE STUCK IN TRAFFIC JAMS?

Get Britain Moving

Friday April 24,2009

By Geoff Marsh & Emily Garnham for express.co.uk

The Daily Express has launched a landmark campaign to Get Britain Moving - and we need YOUR help.

Our roads are a national disgrace. Potholes alone cost British drivers a staggering £1million in repairs every single day.

But while roadworks blight every city, town and village in the country, nothing ever improves.

The traffic in the UK only gets worse, with millions of motorists stranded in queues every day as as workmen dig up holes - and leave them unattended.

Last year, we spent 140 million hours stuck in traffic jams. But while road users paid an astonishing £32 billion in tax, a pathetic £8 billion was spent on the road network.

So, Express.co.uk is launching a nationwide crusade to sort out the mess on Britain's roads - and we need YOUR help.

Motorists stranded on the M25

We want to know how bad the situation is in your area.

Are there roadworks in YOUR street, or on your way to work, that have brought traffic to a standstill?

Is traffic being made worse in YOUR area because workmen have dug holes in the road and then abandoned them?

How much of your working day do YOU spend struck in traffic jams?

We want to know where Britain's worst roadworks are, so we can help get them fixed.

ì
Drivers get an exceedingly poor deal in this country. We are treated as children or morons or worse.

Please send us pictures, if you have them, plus details of where the problem is, the delays it's causing and what you think should be done.

Every major motoring organisation in the country is behind us.

The AA, RAC, Institute of Advanced Motorists, Freight Transport Association and Licensed Taxi Drivers Association are ALL backing our campaign...and now we need YOUR help.

Brian Gregory, from the Association of British Drivers, said: "We're right behind Express.co.uk's campaign to Get Britain Moving.

SEARCH UK NEWS for:

"Drivers get an exceedingly poor deal in this country We are treated as children or morons or worse.

"The roads that we are travelling on are actually making things more dangerous.

"From structural damage to vehicles caused by potholes to poorly lit roads - all these fly in the face of Government pledges to improve road safety."

He added: "We pay a fortune every year in road tax but the amount that goes back into the roads is tiny.

"In the US they raise £51bn in road user taxes and £49bn goes back into ROADS - never mind transport.

"We've never tried to keep up with traffic growth by building the road network we desperately need as a country.

"What have we got? We've got third world road transport thinking, endless queues that could be easily avoided and a government which is anti-car."

With your help, we can stop this farce...and Get Britain Moving.

DRIVERISTS

24.04.09, 9:35pm

People who have political power seem to have a pathological need to persecute somebody. Now that the persecution of women, ethnic minorities, and homosexuals has (rightly) been made illegal, they've turned their attention towards drivers. It really is that bad. If the government treated ethnic minorities like they treat drivers they'd have to arrest themselves for being racist.

NUFFIN WRONG WIFF A HOLE IN THE ROAD MATE

23.04.09, 9:18am

Bernard Cribbins Hole in the ground Lyrics

There I was, a-digging this hole
A hole in the ground, so big and sort of round it was
There was I, digging it deep
It was flat at at the bottom and the sides were steep
When along, comes this bloke in a bowler which he lifted and scratched his head
Well we looked down the hole, poor demented soul and he said

Do you mind if I make a suggestion?

Don't dig there, dig it elsewhere
Your digging it round and it ought to be square
The shape of it's wrong, it's much much too long
And you can't put hole wher a hole don't belong

I ask, what a liberty eh
Nearly bashed him right in the bowler

Well there was I, stood in me hole
Shovelling earth for all I was worth
There was him, standing up there
So grand and official with his nose in the air
So I gave him a look sort of sideways and I leaned on my shvel and sighed

Well I lit me a fag and having took a drag I replied

I just couldnít bear, to dig it elsewhere
I'm digging it round co's I donít want it square
And if you disagree it don't bother me
That ís the place where the holes gonna be

Well there we were, disscussing this hole
A hole in the groud so big and sort of round
Well it's not there now, the grounds all flat
And beneath it is the bloke in the bowler hat

And that's that

The foreman dropped the road gang at the roadworks with their equipment. Oh no said the Foreman I forgot the shovels. The gang looked worried what shall we do now boss ? they said.
Well said the foreman you'll just have to improvise and lean on each other until i get back.

ARE YOU FED UP WITH BRITAIN'S ROADWORKS?

22.04.09, 10:36am

One of the reasons we have such incredibly poor quality roads is that we have the most anti-motorist and anti-car government ever. Labour will never learn to live with the private car. Instead we get huge over-taxation of motorists and all Labour can do is to continually reduce speed limits all the time which is simply not the answer. Our poor road condition also affects lorries which deliver all our goods to the shops. The long term solution is to get rid of Labour forever.

TOO MANY PEOPLE TOO MANY CARS

22.04.09, 8:58am

The UK is overcrowded and there isn't any solution to the problem. You can repair the roads and make the constant traffic jams smoother.
You are well past critical mass and heading for third world status. Nothing can stop this you can see it coming but it's too late to avoid the result.
I wish it were otherwise but the series of decisions that got you on this road-no pun intended-cannot be reversed. It is as Ferris Bueller says at the end of the movie "over".
The Romans probably kept hoping they would return to greatness but all they got was bread and circuses. All you get is Gordon Brown and MPs on 200 pounds a day to sign on, they actually have to do anything. If that rip off doesn't tell you where you are at nothing will.

DAILY EXPRESS, IF YOU WANT TO GET BRITAIN MOVING, MORE IMPORTANTLY, GET A FAIR DEAL FOR ALL BRITONS AND GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE BACK IN THEIR HANDS THEN ...

21.04.09, 6:02pm

Support Cameron 100% in every way possible for a general election in June. The people need YOUR help. The people need your banner headlines and anything it takes to accomplish this.

You will never get Britain moving with Brown firmly and comfortably in 10 Downing Street.

You cannot push a stone uphill. Brown is at the top and is determined to stay there. By the time his time runs out, Britain will have taken even more steps backward.

Please stop asking Britons to do something. The way things are, Brown and his tribe of no goods are in control. But the media is and always has been powerful. Use your power and do something, YOU Daily Express, YOU. I wish I were back in England. I'd do something all right. I'd find newspapers willing to print my say on this ignominious and dangerous party in power. Thank you.
