BRITONS INJURED IN BUS CRASH

Sunday June 10,2007

A bus carrying British tourists collided with a passenger car and hit a home on the Belgian coast, injuring 23 people, five seriously, authorities said.

Two people in the car and another two in the house were slightly injured, while 19 people on the bus were hurt, officials said.

The accident happened just before 11am British time in Middelkerke, close to Ostend, some 75 miles west of Brussels. The bus was carrying 35 British tourists.

The injured were taken to hospitals close to Ostend and nearby Bruges, authorities said.

The coach, carrying 35 British tourists, was in collision with a car and a house, the reports said.

Two people in the car and two in the house were slightly injured, and five were seriously hurt, presumably on the bus. The injured were taken to hospitals close to Ostend and nearby Bruges.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of an incident involving British nationals. Consular staff are on the way to the scene, to establish what the facts are."

Coach operator Leger Holidays released a statement saying the coach was returning from a tour of Prague, Vienna and Budapest.

The firm, based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, said: "Following an overnight stop at 11.10am local time, a Leger Holidays coach was involved in an accident with a vehicle between Middelkirke and Nieuwpoort, Belgium."

A spokesman for the company advised anyone who was concerned about friends or relatives to call 01709 786502 for further information and check the website www.leger.co.uk for updates.
