Police officer dies in triple stabbing

A POLICE officer was killed and another man grievously wounded in a triple stabbing in Luton earlier today.

PC Jonathan Henry PC Jonathan Henry

Jonathan Henry, 36, is believed to have been responding to an attack on a window cleaner in the town centre.

At a press conference at Luton police station this afternoon, Detective Superintendent Keith Garwood refused to reveal the exact circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

He said PC Henry was attending 999 calls from two members of the public after a man, said by witnesses to be a window cleaner, was stabbed in the back.

He attended in a marked police car and was with a number of other officers when he was attacked.

Mr Garwood confirmed PC Henry was wearing a stab vest, but refused to confirm reports from witnesses that the officer was stabbed in the neck.

Two civilians were also injured by the knifeman before he was subdued by armed police using a baton round and Taser stun gun. A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Home Secretary John Reid said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death today of a police officer while on duty with Bedfordshire Police.

“Such events highlight the dangers that police officers face every day on the front line protecting the public.

“This is a tragic event and I offer my deepest sympathy to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues.”

The injured man, a 55-year-old from Luton, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. A third man is also being treated.

PC Henry leaves behind wife Mary and daughter Maggie, who is just weeks away from her first birthday.
