WITH his critically acclaimed rock opera Quadrophenia set to be resurrected on stage, The Who’s Pete Townshend has taken a swipe at fellow rocker Sting, one of the show’s original stars.

The Who’s 1973 album, which tells the story of the Mod scene in the early Sixties, was adapted for the big screen in 1979 and starred Phil Daniels in the lead as Jimmy and Sting as Ace Face. A new stage version of the show embarks on a nationwide tour from next month.

Looking back at the film, Townshend still believes Daniels was “perfect” in the role of Jimmy but is less complimentary about The Police front man’s performance.

“Awful at the time, rather wooden,” he declares, before adding: “Though I am a huge fan of Sting and the Police as musicians.”
