SHAMED TORY MP FACES £13,000 BILL

Tuesday January 29,2008

CONSERVATIVE MP Derek Conway faces a Commons ban and a bill for £13,000 after he misused his allowance to pay his son as a researcher.

He apologised “unreservedly” for his “shortcomings and misjudgments”.

MPs are expected to agree a motion accepting the punishment. But Tory activists, furious at a “sleaze” row after weeks of Labour in the spotlight, want leader David Cameron to take tough action.

Mr Conway’s son Freddie, 19, was starting university when he was hired as a researcher and paid more than £40,000 over three years. “He seems to have been all but invisible during the period of his employment,” a report said.

But a party spokesman ruled out withdrawing the whip from Mr Conway which would effectively have shut him out of the parliamentary party. “Derek Conway has apologised fully on the floor of the House. The appropriate punishment is being administered,” he said.
