AL FAYED: PRINCE PHILIP SHOULD STILL TAKE THE STAND

Tuesday March 18,2008

Jack Teague for express.co.uk

MOHAMED Al Fayed is attempting to overturn the decision not to call Prince Philip to give evidence at the Diana inquest.

Mr Al Fayed's lawyers are going to the high court and seeking leave for a judicial review earlier this month by the coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, who had previously ruled that Prince Philip and the Queen should not be called upon to answer questions at the inquest.

Lord Justice Baker has previously stated that calling the Queen to answer questions from Al Fayed's lawyers or calling the Duke of Edinburgh to give evidence would not "further the inquest".

Mr Al Fayed's legal team will put their arguments before three judges this afternoon.

If the the judicial review is successful, it could be possible for any new witnesses to begin giving evidence next week.

Princess Diana died along with Mr Al Fayed's son Dodi in 1997, following a fatal car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in 1997.
