ARMY INTERPRETER FACES SPY TRIAL

Friday April 25,2008

An Iranian-born Army interpreter accused of spying will face trial in October.

Daniel James denies allegations under the Official Secrets Act that he collected and communicated information useful to an enemy.

The 45-year-old, of Cliff Road, Brighton, also denies a charge of misconduct in public office.

James, a Territorial Army soldier, worked as a translator for General David Richards, British commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan.

He is accused of divulging secrets to Iran.

He appeared via videolink for a brief hearing at the Old Bailey where the trial date was fixed for October 2. James remains in custody.
