UNTAMED: TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Thursday May 1,2008

Caroline Jowett

FANCY an African safari? A trip to Anatarctica? A bird's-eye view of America?

All these can be yours and without leaving the comfort of your armchair.

Wildlife photographer Steve Bloom has spent the last 10 years travelling the world, from the African savannah to the jungles of Borneo, from frozen Arctic wastes to rocky mountain passes to capture the lives of the animals that live there.

The result is Untamed (Abrams, £15),  a stunning collection of photographs that not only shows the animals in their natural habitats but tells the story of his life as a photographer, his concerns at the speed with which our natural environment is disappearing and his optimism at the resilience of our tiny planet.

Wide-eyed and alert, a leopard hunts in the dark

Steve has braved freezing cold, storm and tempest, blistering heat and the menacing darkness of African nights to get close to his subjects and the results show the beauty, terror, humour and majesty of untamed animal life.
