SHOULD BRITAIN QUIT THE EU ALTOGETHER?

Thursday June 19,2008

GORDON Brown will attempt to save the hated EU Lisbon Treaty today despite growing opposition across Europe.

The Prime Minister is meeting EU leaders in Brussels to discuss how to salvage the document following its rejection in a referendum in Ireland last week.

Mr Brown faced fury last night as the Government forced the treaty through its final Parliamentary hurdles. It was due to get Royal Assent and go on to the statute books early today after being backed by the House of Lords.

Labour and Lib Dem peers rejected a last-ditch Tory bid to postpone passing the treaty into law.  Anti-treaty protesters, furious about the surrender of more sovereignty to Brussels, heckled peers as the issue was debated.

In the Commons, David Cameron accused the Government of cowardice for pressing ahead with ratifying the treaty.

The Tory leader said: “I’ve seen more spine and leadership from a bunch of jellyfish.”

He said to Mr Brown: “Why don’t you give some leadership, tell us what you think and kill this treaty today?”
