FULHAM FIND FUNDS TO SIGN UP JOHNSON

Wednesday July 23,2008

Paul Joyce

FULHAM continued their lavish spending on striking reinforcements last night after having a £10million bid accepted for Everton striker Andy Johnson.

Johnson, 26, was not involved in Everton’s friendly with Preston at Deepdale and will now be given permission to talk terms with Fulham, after the £6.5m capture of Bobby Zamora from West Ham.

The move underlines Fulham boss Roy Hodgson’s determination not to become embroiled in another frantic battle for survival this season after Wigan, leading the chase for Johnson, bowed out of the race unwilling to match terms.

Everton manager David Moyes wanted to keep Johnson but agreed to sanction his exit after it became increasingly clear he wanted to quit.

Moyes will plough the proceeds into beefing up his own squad with Sporting Lisbon midfield Joao Moutinho and Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito top of his wanted list.

Everton have also contacted Rennes over their £4m-rated Cameroon international Stephane M’Bai.

Johnson had wanted to stay in the North-west, where his children and family are settled, but a move to London was his second preference.
