Top Gear boss Clare Pizey has stepped down from her role after joining the BBC programme back in March, just months after Freddie Flintoff's crash.

Clare's news has come as a shock, with the BBC series being thrown into doubt as to whether it will continue.

A former colleague of Clare's, who previously worked on Top Gear, has spoken about the sudden exit and claimed the production team is now concerned there will be no show without her input.

"Everyone is assuming that it’s over for Top Gear now Clare has left," a source told The Times.

Meanwhile, a BBC executive shared that Clare's departure was a "big blow" to the whole team and added: "I’m not sure it quite signals the end for Top Gear but it’s definitely on life support."

Express.co.uk has contacted BBC for a comment.

The news of Clare leaving comes just months after Freddie announced he would not be returning to the show after his crash in December 2022.

Earlier this year, the BBC confirmed it would not continue filming the latest series of the programme following claims Freddie had been emotionally and physically impacted by the crash.

After his crash, bosses were accused of "failing to properly look after" Freddie, who was filming an episode of the hit series at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome.

It was claimed Freddie became injured whilst sharing his opinion of a car he was driving for a review segment.

Back in May, a source told The Sun: "The BBC has been keen to keep a lid on the extent of Freddie's injuries for obvious reasons.

"The accident itself was far worse than anyone really realises - it's hard to put into words, really; what he went through is simply unimaginable.

"But essentially the car turned over at speed, and Freddie - who also broke some ribs - understandably is traumatised by the whole thing.

"He's been incredibly brave and stoical, and thankfully is getting stronger. He’s just taking things week by week."

At the time of the crash, a BBC spokesperson said: "Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning - with crew medics attending the scene immediately."

Top Gear series one to 33 are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
