Blue Lights: Shane and Annie rush into burning house

Blue Lights fans issued the same complaints just minutes into the latest episode. The crime drama returned on Monday (April 22) as the second episode of series two aired.

Moments into the nail-biting show, constable Annie Conlon (Katherine Devlin) and newcomer Frank Blake received a call about a fire. As they approached the burning building, Annie questioned where the fire service was.

They panicked when they discovered the fire service would take longer than five minutes. Shane said he would go inside while Annie could wait for them, however, she insisted on following him after learning two people were trapped.

They removed their jackets and wrapped them around their nose and mouths before walking into the flames. They managed to rescue a mother and son who were upstairs before the house exploded.

But fans were distracted during the dramatic scenes as they took to social media to question how two police officers could walk into a fire without protection. One exclaimed: "#BlueLights no way are coppers allowed to go into burning buildings like that!!"

Another agreed: "Indeed, and given the temperatures involved their clothes and hair would be burning."

A third quipped: "Fire brigade turned up eventually" followed by a confused emoji.

Another viewer appeared to find fault in Shane's technique as he slowly moved up the stairs with his palm resting on the wall. They declared: "You use the back of your hand against the wall in a fire, not your palm #BlueLights."

Blue Lights is set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which Siân Brooke branded a "character" in the show as she praised the city.

The actress, who plays Constable Grace Ellis, said on the podcast In the Spotlight: "It really is one of the most brilliant cities.

"If people don't know it, you've got this beautiful countryside that rolls into the city and then the city rolls out to the sea."

The 44-year-old continued: "To film there is fantastic because you have all this breadth of locations that you can use. You can be in the centre of the city doing a car chase in the morning and then out on top of Cave Hill or wherever in the afternoon."

She added: "I think Belfast itself is a character within the show, and I think it's quite a strong character."

Blue Lights is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
