Ralf Little announced last month that he'd be leaving Death in Paradise behind after four years, and attention has now turned to who his replacement could be.

Speculation has been rife about who will take on Ralf Little's highly sought after Death in Paradise lead role, after DI Neville Parker sailed away into the sunset to pursue love.

Everyone from actor and Reclaim Party founder Laurence Fox to ex-Eastenders star Danny Dyer have been in the frame as his replacement.

Yet now fans have put forward intriguing theories about when the nation might find out the name of his successor. One tweeted: "Ok anybody wanna guess when we meet the next DI?

"With the great track record of Kris Marshall introducing how the next season turns out, could the season finale of BEYOND Paradise show a look a glimmer of them?" (sic) The fan continued: "Maybe if like last year we get a BEYOND Paradise Christmas episode that glides into the Death in Paradise Christmas episode?"

Another shot back with a tears of laughter emoji: "Probably whenever the Christmas TV guides come out!" A third chimed in: "There's a DIP Christmas special, so I'm guessing it'll be then personally."

However, a fourth voiced fears for the much-loved show, exclaiming: "I'm lost here. Did KM [Kris Marshall] hint last season of BP? Are you saying it will be over?" Rumours have been rife that Kris - who now plays DI Humphrey Goodman in the spin-off Beyond Paradise - could return to the original show, but this time in Ralf's shoes.

Last Friday's scenes of Kris (DI Humphrey Goodman) and Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) partying as they prepared for their wedding, delivered a strong hint to some quick-witted fans that they could be about to make a return to Saint Marie.

However, other theories about who could become the new DI have seen names such as Rupert Grint, Gavin and Stacey star Matthew Horne, Black Books' Dylan Moran and many more introduced into the frame, so Kris could still face tough competition.

It's also been suggested that the BBC might be keen to shake things up and introduce a female detective this time around.

If so, names such as Diane Morgan, Miranda Hart and Julia Sawalha are all potential contenders to take on Ralf's role.

Meanwhile, Ralf released an official statement confirming his departure recently.

The emotional 44-year old recapped: "[Neville] got to sail away into the sunset with his best friend. Who knows what happens for them next?"

He thanked everyone who supported him over his four and a half year stint, admitting: "Coming into a series beloved by millions was a huge responsibility and I had no idea whether viewers would take to my interpretation of Neville’s character, and indeed to me."

Now it has come time for a new actor to wonder exactly the same thing - and the coming months are sure to reveal all.
