Although Steven Pien aar’s sweet 43rd-minute
strike killed off Sigma Olomouc’s hopes, Everton had to play with 10
men for most of the game following Tony Hibbert’s early dismissal.
There
was also mixed news in the transfer market for Moyes, who is on the
verge of signing Sylvain Distin for £5.3million on a three-year deal,
but had a £10m bid for David Wheater rejected by Middlesbrough.
Everton
were never going to lose this tie but Hibbert’s red card made for a
less comfortable exercise than Moyes wanted in the stifling
late-afternoon heat.
“We were under pressure early on,” he said, and the sending off made it even more difficult.”
Had
Lukas Bajer’s free-kick found the net rather than the crossbar, it
might have offered the 10,212 crowd a glimmer of hope. But Sigma never
went as close again until substitute Pavel Sultes netted a 79th-minute
consolation.
Moyes is also hoping today to land Argentine midfielder Ever Banega on loan from Valencia.SIGMA OLOMOUC 1
