United and Sporting had been deadlocked in recent days over talks for the 25-year-old but they have now made a major breakthrough.
Ed Woodward has agreed to pay £46.6million up front, with an additional £8.5m in realistic add-ons the Portuguese club are happy with.
Fernandes and agent Miguel Pinho are due in Manchester on Wednesday to rubber stamp the move ahead of Friday’s 11pm deadline.
United and Sporting agreeing a fee means the switch is now down to the Portuguese midfielder who has been in fine form this season.
Fernandes has netted 15 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions.
Earlier today in his pre-match press conference Solskjaer was coy on doing any transfer business this week.
He said: “I haven't got any updates for you on transfers. Yeah, I think it was a waste [of a question].
“I gave you the option, but I haven't got anything to say now. My mind is just on the game.”

United are desperate to add creativity to their ranks this month and push on for a top four place and Champions League qualification for next season.
The Red Devils were interested in signing Jack Grealish from Aston Villa and James Maddison from Leicester but realised deals for the duo would be too difficult to complete in January.
Instead they turned their attention to Fernandes and have reached an agreement with Sporting over their prized asset.
The deal is subject to personal terms being ironed out and the player passing a medical at Old Trafford.
