Chelsea: Pundit sends warning over Kai Havertz transfer
Chelsea enter Wednesday night’s Premier League showdown with Liverpool knowing they need to win. Should they pick up the points, the Blues will be within touching distance of securing Champions League football for next season. But, regardless, they’re closing in on the signing of Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen - who has the potential to be special.
For a while, it’s seemed as if Chelsea would need Champions League football in order to entice Havertz to Stamford Bridge when the transfer window reopens.
But it’s recently emerged that the Blues are closing in on the signing of the Germany international - regardless of what happens in the final two Premier League matches of their season.
The Athletic have claimed Chelsea are currently locked in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal, but are confident they’ll get it done.
For Lampard, it will represent quite a coup.
Havertz is considered one of the best talents on his generation, having been in electric form for Leverkusen over the past 18 months.
In Germany, it’s easy to look good if you play for Bayern Munich. Or even Borussia Dortmund, despite the fact they haven’t won the Bundesliga title since 2012.

But Havertz has caught the eye in an otherwise average Leverkusen side, who only narrowly missed out on securing a place in next season’s Champions League.
Last season, he sparkled.
The youngster scored 17 goals and registered four assists in the Bundesliga alone, while also managing six goal involvements from as many matches in the Europa League.
At the time, big clubs were linked. Bayern, Real Madrid and Manchester United were all credited with an interest but, in the end, Havertz chose to stay put.
Initially, he looked sluggish and jaded at the start of the current campaign.
For Lampard, he’s the player who has the potential to coax the best from strikers Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud next season.
And he also feels the German has the potential to strike up a terrific understanding with flair players Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech in west London.
There came a time where Chelsea fans could be forgiven for fearing that, should they lose to Havertz, they’d miss out on the Champions League.
But the playmaker is sold on a move to Stamford Bridge regardless.
And that means that, ahead of the showdown, Chelsea are on the verge of signing a very special talent.
