James Maddison's view on Tottenham transfer emerges as Newcastle 'prepare bid'

Tottenham and Newcastle are readying themselves for a bidding war.

is reportedly open to joining both and  this summer as he looks to secure Premier League football next season following Leicester City's relegation to the Championship. Newcastle are said to be preparing an opening offer for Maddison while reports circulated recently that Spurs had submitted a joint £50million bid for Maddison and his Foxes team-mate Harvey Barnes.

Leicester are hoping to receive a fee in the region of £55m for Maddison alone but according to CBS' transfer expert Ben Jacobs, Newcastle feel £40m is a more realistic asking price given that his contract runs out next summer. Jacobs tweeted: "Newcastle will move for James Maddison. #NUFC plan is to be disciplined, though.

"They feel circa £40m is market value because Maddison's contract expires next summer. #LCFC hoping for a bidding war and want at least £55m, and could well push for more if multiple suitors."

He added: "Several clubs looking now, although some put off by #LCFC valuation. As revealed last summer, Spurs also very keen. Maddison open to both moves."

Maddison is currently out on tour with the England national team for their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign and was given a starting place in Gareth Southgate's side against Malta on Friday. He travels alongside Newcastle's Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier, who will no doubt be in his ear about a potential move to St James' Park.

The 26-year-old was one of the shining lights in an otherwise dismal season for Leicester as they crashed out of England's top tier, just seven years after lifting the Premier League trophy.

Maddison's 19-goal contribution made up for almost half of Leicester's overall return but weren't enough to keep the Foxes up.

Reacting to Leicester's relegation, Maddison wrote on social media: “Absolutely devastated to be relegated from the Premier League. I’ve took a bit of time to reflect on the outcome of the season and to be honest it doesn’t make it any easier at all. This will hurt for a very long time and probably stick with us all forever.

“But that’s life and it’s about how you bounce back from setbacks and failure and unfortunately that’s exactly what this season was, a failure. We should never have been in the position we were with the players we have. But we take responsibility for that and the negativity that comes with it and continue to stick together.”
