Arsenal could sign another Kai Havertz with Chelsea transfer rumour 'bubbling up'

Arsenal are expected to do business in the January transfer window after going down to three straight defeats in all competitions.

Arsenal are reportedly set to follow-up the signing of £65million man Kai Havertz by buying another Chelsea star. The German forward moved across London in the summer, but has thus far struggled to justify the move having scored just four times in the Premier League this season.

Italian midfielder Jorginho had already made the same switch last January, as did Willian in 2020 in what was Mikel Arteta’s first permanent signing as Arsenal boss. And now the Spaniard is reportedly lining up a move for Marc Cucurella.

The 25-year-old only moved to Chelsea ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, for a fee in the region of £62m. But the left-back has failed to nail down a regular starting place, featuring in just nine league matches this season.

The Spaniard is ruled out until March after undergoing ankle surgery last month, but that seemingly hasn’t deterred Arsenal from being interested. And Chelsea-News journalist Simon Phillips has now added to the speculation.

Speaking on his Substack, Phillips said: “I’ve heard some whispers last week of a potential move to Arsenal (for Cucurella) bubbling up.” He added that the Blues are also open to the prospect of a sale.

Mauricio Pochettino is already having to deal without the injured Ben Chilwell, but has Levi Colwill available. Chelsea have also been linked with a January move for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

Pochettino came close to allowing Cucurella to go out on loan to Manchester United in September, but a deal didn’t materialise. He has however shown his versatility this season, covering at right-back with Reece James and Malo Gusto both sidelined.

An Arsenal bid would present Pochettino with another key decision to make in what is shaping up to be a pivotal month in Chelsea’s season. The club are also assessing the future of Conor Gallagher, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

On Tuesday, the Blues host Middlesbrough in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final. As well as the return trip to the Riverside, they also play Fulham and go to leaders Liverpool in the Premier League.
