may reportedly miss out on Teun Koopmeiners this summer despite scouting the in-demand Atalanta midfielder. The Blues have been strongly linked with Koopmeiners ahead of the transfer window but will face strong competition for his signature.

Reports in Italian media claim that Chelsea sent scouts to run the rule on the Dutchman during Atalanta’s Europa League quarter-final victory over Liverpool last week. Koopmeiners was influential in his side’s 3-1 aggregate triumph, ending Jurgen Klopp’s chance of a final European trophy at Anfield.

Koopmeiners is one of the most highly-sought midfielders in world football. Chelsea are likely to be rivalled for his signature by a host of their Premier League and European rivals.

According to Italian publication Sportmediaset, Chelsea hope to put a huge offer on the table for the 26-year-old at the end of the season. The report claims that Koopmeiners could be available for around £51million.

But transfer expert Dean Jones, speaking to Give Me Sport, says Juventus still lead the race for Koopmeiners. That is despite Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all being linked with the former AZ Alkmaar player, too.

Koopmeiners has publicly announced his intention to leave Atalanta at the end of the season. Speaking during the March international break, he joked that the British weather would not deter him from a move to the Premier League.

“Last year there was concrete interest from Napoli. However, in the end the two clubs did not find an agreement. I told Atalanta that in the coming summer I want to move,” Koopmeiners said.

“But something really interesting must present itself to leave Bergamo. My fiancee and I are having a great time in Italy, but for some clubs in England I could even bear the rainy days there. I hope options present themselves so I can think about it.’

“I hope Atalanta gets a good fee for me because I had a wonderful time in Bergamo. I would be lying if I said I didn’t hear the news about the interest from Juventus and Premier League clubs have shown to me.”

However, Atalanta director Luca Percassi shot down Koopmeiners’ willingness to leave, insisting: “This club is solid and does not need to sell. Koopmeiners has not been sold to Juventus, nor anyone else. In fact, he never asked us to be sold.”
