believes Coventry City were ‘lucky’ to force a penalty shootout on Sunday, with the midfielder insisting deserve to be in the final. Fernandes was part of the United side that threw away a three-goal lead against the Championship outfit, with men blasted for their poor performances.

United were a fortunate VAR call away from being dumped out of the FA Cup in one of the most embarrassing ways imaginable. If it wasn’t for a marginal offside in the build-up to Victor Torp’s extra-time goal at Wembley, United’s FA Cup campaign - and likely their season - would’ve been over.

Instead, the Red Devils can look ahead to another cup final appearance under manager Ten Hag - his third since arriving in England. But, despite the second-half collapse, Fernandes thinks the right team progressed from Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.

Speaking after the game, the Portuguese ace said: “Obviously I felt the team had good moments and had good pressure that we could make pressure on them and make them have long balls. With Harry [Maguire] and Casemiro at the back winning a lot of duels for us, it was better to press high than stay deep. But at the end, they got some lucky goals but at the same time, we have to give credit to them.”

It isn’t an opinion shared by many, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher claiming the performance - even though United won - could end up costing Ten Hag his job. Regardless, Fernandes believes people connected to United should be ‘happy’ about the team’s achievement - a sentiment shared by Ten Hag.

Fernandes said: “Obviously, it is a little bit but at the same time we have to be happy. It's two years in a row we have reached a final, we know how difficult it is to get to the final of the FA Cup. Obviously we wanted to get there in a different way, we know the result was in our hands.

“For the first 70 minutes, we were so good, we controlled the game and then obviously well done from them, Coventry, they believed, they gave everything they could to get back to the game and they did it. We have to have huge respect for what Coventry did but we had everything on our side to get a comfortable result.”

United return to Premier League action on Wednesday night when Sheffield United visit Old Trafford. The record English champions sit seventh in the table, a whopping 16 points off fourth-placed Aston Villa.
