After a dire opening 45 minutes, the Welsh outfit gradually gained the upper hand in the second half.
And in the 69th minute, Lawrence got on the end of a wonderful left- wing cross from full-back Andrew Taylor to guide an accurate header beyond Barnsley loan keeper David Button and into the far corner.
Cardiff manager Malky Mackay said: “It was a great header from Liam, who had an excellent game for us.”
Barnsley boss Keith Hill added: “You can see why we are down near the bottom. We are struggling to create openings and score goals.”
