Barkley has started all of Everton’s Premier League matches this season – underlining his reputation as one of the England’s brightest talents.
But the 19-year-old was replaced after an hour by Leon Osman in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa and Martinez insists he will pick the right moment to give Barkley a rest.

The Spaniard said: “Football will make that decision. I am not going to be someone who will do something unless I see clear signs that a player needs to be rested or given a breather.
“When you are young you can cope with anything as along as everything is being done in the right way.”
Martinez expects to be without defender John Heitinga and striker Arouna Kone for Sunday’s meeting with Tottenham.
