The star striker injured his Achilles in April forcing him to miss out on the World Cup in Belgium.

But he has now trained for two weeks and Aston Villa boss Lambert will consider him for the match with the champions.

The Scot said: "He's getting closer. Next week we will see how he is for the Man City game.

"I'm not saying he'll start, or anything, but he's certainly getting close.

"Christian's alright, he's had a good week of training under his belt. We will just look at it next week.

"He's only trained two weeks and not done a pre-season. He's had a few little kicks and body contact. The injury's fine now.

"He's taken a couple of kicks which is normal, it's just lack of practice."

But Lambert will take no risks on him.

He said: "He's a natural athlete but you don't want him to break down. Everyone is happy to see him back. It's been a long road for him and he missed the World Cup. It's been great for him.

"We've had a great start without a recognised number nine and that will give everyone a lift.

"He's desperate to play but it does not make common sense risking him yet."

Meanwhile skipper Ron Vlaar (calf) is still out for this weekend's trip to Chelsea.
