Managerial patience
With so much money on the line, Premier League clubs are not shy of changing managers in a bid the change fortunes. Newcastle and West Ham have bucked the trend though and benefiting from their decision to keep faith in Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce.
Pavey continuing to run
You would be hard pushed to find many 40-year-old mothers of two competing in elite sport, never mind topping the podium like Jo Pavey. The British long-distance runner followed her remarkable 5,000 metres bronze at the Commonwealth Games by becoming the oldest ever female European champion over 10,000m.
Froch giving Groves a rematch
Plenty thought Carl Froch was lucky to win his first fight against George Groves and he could have easily of moved on. Yet he put in an impressive display at Wembley second time around, knocking out Groves in the eighth round to claim one of his greatest wins and biggest pay days.
Chelsea selling David Luiz for £40million
We all know Paris St-Germain have a lot of money but even Chelsea will have been taken aback by the amount they were willing to fork out for Luiz. That £40m looked an even crazier figure after his World Cup displays.

Ronnie O'Sullivan at the UK Championships
Despite having a broken left ankle, Ronnie O'Sullivan chose to compete at the Coral UK Championship and, better still, left York's Barbican Centre as champion, fending off a dramatic Judd Trump comeback land his fifth UK title.
WORST
Luis Suarez bite
On the back of a wonderful season for Liverpool and single-handedly ending England's World Cup campaign, Luis Suarez found himself making headlines for the wrong reasons yet again. Italy's Giorgio Chiellini was the victim of his latest bite, leading to a lengthy ban from all footballing activity.
Watson dropping Mickelson
Tom Watson dropping Phil Mickelson for a full day's play on Saturday at the Ryder Cup was a big mistake. While his record is not great, he was the team's experienced player and duly laid into the American captain afterwards.
Wiggins' Team Sky absence
The Tour de France's Grand Depart in Yorkshire was one of the moments of the year, yet the one of Great Britain's finest ever cyclists was not there. Team Sky's decision to omit Sir Bradley Wiggins was compounded when reigning champion Chris Froome crashed out on stage five.

Farah's marathon bid
Despite winning the 5,000m and 10,000m crowns at the European Championships, 2014 will be looked back on with disappointment after struggling at the London Marathon. The debutant struggled in his debut over 26.2 miles and finished eighth, nearly four minutes behind the winner.
Grand Final punch
Your team is in the Super League Grand Final and Old Trafford is packed to the rafters - a special occasion ruined when Wigan's Ben Flower viciously attacked St Helens' Lance Hohaia after two minutes. The prop was sent off and St Helens triumphed.
BEST/WORST
KP sacking
In February, Kevin Pietersen was controversially dumped by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Whether getting rid of the batsman was a good or bad move depends on who you speak to...
