Virginia rocked by last-second shot at March Madness after college star's horrific mistake
Furman were quite literally handed the win against Virginia after a shock turnover with seconds remaining, and they secured only their second-ever win in the competition
The first shock of the NCAA play-offs has already happened as Furman scored a last-second three-pointer to dump out Virginia. Virginia went into the game as heavy favourites, although it was a tighter game than expected. They led by two points and had the ball in their hands as the clock wound down, but Kihei Clark gave it away and handed Furman a chance to win the game.

Rather than clearing the ball to safety or simply keeping hold of possession, Clark shockingly tossed the ball to Garrett Hein, who set up JP Pegues for the three and the win. It was the last action of the game, and no.4 seed Virginia are out already.
It was a stunning end to an exciting clash, as Furman took the win with 2.2 seconds remaining on the game clock. The Virginia players couldn't believe it, many with their hands on their head as the three-pointer was made.
Furman are in the tournament for the first time since 1980, and have proven that they're not there just to make up the numbers. And Pegues made the shot of his career so far, especially as he was 0-3 from behind the line during the match.
While Virginia were seeded at no.4, Furman went into the clash as no.13, but it just goes to show that anything can happen. March Madness is certainly in full swing, and Virginia's low scoring tactics have undone them.
According to media coordinator for March Madness, David Worlock, the win over Virginia is the second time ever that Furman have been victorious in the tournament. Their first success came back in 1974, when they beat South Carolina in the first round.

Virginia did try to desperately swing the result once again, as Reece Beekman managed to get a shot off as the buzzer sounded. However, it ricocheted off the backboard and then the rim, before Furman poured onto the court in celebration.
Furman will play either no. 5 seed San Diego State or no. 12 seed Charleston in the second round on Saturday, as they look to build on their success. It's more disappointment for Virginia, who also lost as a no. 4 seed during the first round of the 2021 NCAA tournament.
