Jak Jones was caught off guard during the final session of his defeat to as a Crucible spectator was required to usher the Welshman backstage. Jones valiantly fought his way into the contest after falling behind early on, but the spirited comeback wasn't enough to prevent Wilson sealing his first triple crown title.

The outlook was bleak for Jones, nicknamed the Silent Assassin, when he began the final by losing each of the first seven frames. From then on, the 30-year-old steadily set about closing the gap on Wilson, but he was clinging on by the last session on Monday.

With Wilson one frame away from victory, Jones prolonged the match by making it 17-12. At that point an interval was called, giving both players a chance to collect their thoughts before the resumption of the marathon contest.

But Jones seemingly didn't get the memo as he walked over to the table and took his seat. An awkward moment followed before he was ushered backstage by a member of the crowd.

Once play got back underway, Jones continued making life difficult for Wilson, who may have feared for his maiden world title when the underdog won two more frames to make it 17-14.

Wilson finally hauled his win over the line in the 32nd frame, however, before breaking down in tears and embracing his family. "My mum and dad have remortgaged and sacrificed their whole lives to get me here," he told BBC Two.

"I have dreamed of this moment - it was so nice to have the family there and let out emotions, because we have been on a real rollercoaster of a journey since I was six years old. I have given everything, I held myself together, kept myself composed and Jak fought and fought and made it so difficult for me."

Jones, meanwhile, was classy in defeat. He said: "Congratulations to Kyren and his family. They deserved it so much. An unbelievable tournament for me.

"A month ago, I was twitching in my first qualifying match. I am happy with that. I thought I would try my best and see what happens but Kyren is solid and has a good all-round game. It wasn’t to be."

Wilson has jumped from 12th to third in the world rankings as a result of his whopping £500,000 cash prize. By finishing runner-up, Jones is now £200,000 richer with by far the biggest single payday of his professional career.
