Europe's tiny country with the world's longest living people

One of the world's smallest countries has the longest average life expectancy but several European countries feature in the top 10.

Want to live longer? In the UK, average life expectancy is 80 years old and in 2024, it fell to its lowest level in a decade. 

While 80 is quite high, many countries around the world have a longer average life expectancy. 

This ranking relies on UN data and according to the research, a tiny European country has the longest living people in the world. 

Life expectancy can be influenced by gender, genetics, lifestyle and access to healthcare.

10. Spain

Spain has the 10th longest living people in the world with an average life expectancy of 84 years. A healthy Mediterranean diet, outdoor living and sunny weather are thought to help people live a long life.

9. South Korea 

South Korea has some of the world's longest living people with an average life expectancy of 84 years. South Korea's success is thought to be due to its excellent healthcare system which is widely accessible.

8. Italy 

Italy has one of Europe's longest life expectancies with the average person living until 84. It's also home to one of the world's Blue Zones. In Sardinia, an unusually high number of people live until they're 100 or longer.

7. Singapore 

Singapore has some of the world's longest living people with residents living on average until 84. Singapore's high quality healthcare system is thought to be responsible for its long living residents.

6. Switzerland 

Switzerland has one of the world's longest life expectancies with residents living until 84 on average. Research has suggested that wealth, access to good healthcare, clean air and a sense of wellbeing could be responsible.
