Europe is full of great cheap holiday spots, where Brits can enjoy affordable pints and great sightseeing for less.

However, one place stands out as the fifth best-value destination in the world for 2024 by Post Office Travel Money, making it Europe’s cheapest.

Famous for its stunning coastline and beautiful beaches, Algarve, in Portugal, is a great budget destination brimming with activities to do and sights to see.

Based on the findings of the brand's Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, the Algarve offers better value for money compared to other European destinations like Marmaris in Turkey and Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, both of which have experienced price increases over the past year.

Examining the prices of eight commonly purchased items, the report reveals that a cup of filter coffee costs only 88p in the Algarve, while a local beer is priced at £2.20 and a glass of wine at £1.76.

The study also pointed out that the average three-course dinner for two, accompanied by a bottle of house wine, totals £39.52 in this sought-after resort, which is less than half of what you'd typically spend in places like Nice or Cancun.

But according to Metro editor Claie Wilson, when she visited the Algarve she was told by locals to avoid July and August “at all costs”, as it’s too hot and busy.

In contrast, one of her tour guides recommended visiting the region in May, with March, October and November also being great months, weather-wise.

The Algarve is known for iconic spots like Praia da Marinha, Praia da Rocha, and Praia de Benagil.

Visitors can experience the unique sea caves and rock formations along the coast by taking a boat tour.

The region also boasts a rich history, with tourists often visiting places like the historic town of Lagos, the Moorish castle in Silves, and the charming village of Alte.

The delicious Portuguese cuisine can be sampled at traditional restaurants known as "tasquinhas”, with Tasquinha Do Carvalho and Tasquinha da Horta enjoying great reviews.

Local specialties include grilled sardines, cataplana (a seafood stew), and pastéis de nata, the delicious custard tarts that have been gaining prominence in the UK over the last few years.
