‌Booked your first-ever holiday? While every cruise company offers something different, some of the largest lines have some similarities.

A new cruise guest ‘magp13’ asked the community for their best advice for a first-time passenger.

‘Lilb1190’ said: “Don’t be surprised when they constantly try to upsell you. Cruise ships are expensive to run, so having everyone pay for their stateroom and enjoy the amenities for a week won’t make them much money.

“They will try to sell you everything, but it shouldn’t be a hard sell. They will tell you about promotions they are running or try to take your picture so that they can sell it to you later. Just decline with a smile unless you want what they are selling.”

While food and many of the ship’s facilities are included in the price of a ticket, cruise passengers can also pay for added extras.

Spa treatments, activities such as laser tag or photos will usually be priced as an extra so guests will need to be careful before signing up for one.

On the first day of the cruise, the crew may try to get passengers to sign up for paid extras so it’s best to politely decline if you’re not looking to spend any extra money.

The guest added: “There is always something going on. Different types of trivia will be happening at various times, comedy shows, live music, variety shows and all sorts of things.

“If these don’t interest you, you can always find something else to do. If you are ever bored, go to something you usually wouldn’t. You might be surprised.”

Cruise ships will often have an app with a daily schedule so guests can choose which activities they’d like to attend.

Some activities may require prior sign-ups, so it’s a great idea to scan the schedule when you first board the ship.

If there’s an activity or event that you’d really like to try, make sure you get a ticket as soon as possible.

A travel agent can provide advice to guests who aren’t sure which activities might sell out.

If a popular activity does sell out, you could always try attending something you wouldn’t normally go to.
