Elizabeth Taylor revealed she never truly loved her husband Eddie Fisher and alleged that she suffered abuse from him during their five-year marriage.

The legendary Hollywood star died over a decade ago in 2011, but never-before-heard audio recordings have given newfound insight into her life away from the silver screen in the HBO documentary, Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday and features bombshells from the late actress pulled from over 70 hours of lost footage.

Elizabeth reveals she “never loved” her fourth husband Eddie and called their marriage “one big awful mistake”.

She was first linked to the actor and TV host in 1958 following her third husband Mike Todd’s tragic death in a plane crash.

“I never loved Eddie. I felt sorry for him. And I liked talking to him about Mike," she said in the film, according to The Sun.

"I don't remember much about the marriage apart from that it was one big awful frigging mistake — and I knew that before I got married.

The actress then confessed: "But I didn't know how to get out of it.”

Elizabeth had seven husbands throughout her life, including two marriages to her Cleopatra co-star Richard Burton, who was close friends with Eddie.

She alleges that the abuse from Eddie ramped up when she met Richard on the set of the notorious historical epic in 1960.

“Eddie at nighttime would sit up – and he had a gun,” Elizabeth remembered.

"Every time I nearly nodded off, he would stroke my arm and say: I'm not going to kill you, I wouldn't shoot you, you are much too pretty.

"All night long,” she continued. “Eventually, I ran from the house – I was so scared."

Elizabeth went on to marry Richard just 10 days after divorcing Eddie in 1964.
