Gardening tips: How to remove moss on drives and patios

Moss looks beautiful in nature as it seamlessly blends in with other plants and creates stunning landscapes.

However, when growing in your garden or patio, this plant can represent a safety risk and change the overall appearance of your green space.

That’s why a gardening expert has unveiled a common household essential that can tackle the problem for very cheap.

Steven Bell, the Managing Director of Paving Shopper, revealed: “Laundry detergent is an affordable and efficient way to tackle moss.

''The beauty of this approach is that it requires no scrubbing; nature does the heavy lifting with the help of rainfall.”

He added to The Sun: “Simply scatter the laundry detergent over the mossy patches when they're dry, and let the upcoming rain wash it away.

''This method is straightforward and kind to the environment, posing no threat to the adjacent grass or plant life.”

According to the expert, this trick is designed for simplicity, avoiding manual rinsing and scrubbing, as the rain will take care of that.

Timing the application of detergent before expected rainfall produces the best results.

However, Steven pointed out that it's important to recognise that the effect of laundry detergent on moss may not be immediate, as it may take several days for the moss to be completely eradicated.

So, for those looking for faster results, a mixture of laundry detergent and water sprayed directly onto the moss can accelerate the process.

After the moss has discoloured and died, rinsing the area with warm water and sweeping with a stiff brush will clear it.

“This approach is not only wallet-friendly but also gentle on the paving materials.”

''Moreover, it’s a safe method for the surrounding garden areas,” added the gardening pro.

''I’ve personally applied biodegradable washing powder on a large area afflicted with moss, sprinkled it across, and left it. Two years on, and the moss has yet to make a return.”
