giant boasts more than 400 outlets across the UK with locations in major cities including London and Birmingham.

But soon shoppers in Glasgow will have to bid farewell to the Newton Mearns Foodhall store come June 15, as it gears up for an extensive revamp.

Other Marks and Spencer store closures have sparked upset among local shoppers, but Glasweigans have had the opposite reaction.

Many loyal customers have taken to social media to express their eagerness for the closure which will result in a fresh new look for the branch.

One enthusiast on Facebook said it "sounds like a good idea!" while another chimed "what a delight".

Google reviews for the Newton Mearns food hall are largely positive too, with many complimenting its "friendly helpful staff".

Post-makeover, shoppers can look forward to a host of new amenities including a bakery, modern click-and-collect services, a cheese barge, and exclusive flower and wine shops.

Marks and Spencer Sparks cardholders will also benefit from the convenience of scan and shop handheld devices, allowing them to effortlessly pick up products on the move.

While the exact reopening date remains under wraps, it's expected that the branch will be welcoming shoppers back later this summer.

No job losses will be made to accommodate the closure as colleagues will temporarily join nearby stores including at Silverburn Shopping Centre, Glasgow and Kingsgate Retail Park, East Kilbride.

It comes as part of wider company plans by M&S to close some of its stores over five years. The major shake-up to its branch portfolio will see "lower productivity" sites axed and new food halls built in some locations.

The retailer currently has 405 stores across the country but has shut down several locations already in Manchester, Swindon and Birmingham between August and November last year.

A staggering 40 Marks and Spencer clothing stores were also axed between November 2016 and July 2023.

Several more shops have been earmarked for closure, including one in Neath, Wales in May this year.

Aberdeen, Scotland will see an M&S store go in 2025, and branches in Weymouth, Sunderland, Hexham, Bradford, Blackburn, Ilford (London), and Walworth (London) will follow, though exact dates are yet to be confirmed.
