A pretty little town in south Wales has been named one of the happiest places to live in the UK.

Monmouth, on the Welsh-English border, has been crowned the third happiest place in Britain and was the best in Wales, according to the Rightmove Happy at Home Index.

The town itself, situated on the River Wye, has a pretty high street lined with cafes, shops and restaurants. Much of the surrounding area is residential with lots of green spaces.

The average house price in Monmouth is £332,661 according to Rightmove and £325,279 according to Zoopla.

However, the cheerful city offers its residents more than just cafes and shops as the stunning area also boasts a rich history. Monmouth Castle dates back to the 11th century and was the birthplace of Henry V, but is sadly a ruin now.

It is close to Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where people can visit the Kymin, St Briavels Castle, the Devil’s Pulpit, Harold’s Stones and King Arthur’s Cave.

People hoping to take a peek at the third happiest place in the UK can get to the town by car via the A40, the A466, the A4136 and the B4293 and by train to nearby Abergavenny and Chepstow.

Rightmove's annual Happy at Home Index asks people how they feel about their area. The 2023 survey was completed by over 26,000 people.

The study found that a sense of pride, belonging and community have a greater bearing on feeling happy in an area, more so than access to things like public transport, schools and job opportunities.

It also found that those living near woodland, mountains, the coast or a river, were more likely to be happy than those who live in a built-up area.

Other places that were among the happiest places to live were the Isle of Anglesey, Richmond upon Thames, St Ives, Galashiels, Harrogate and Skipton.
