The 20 best places to retire in the UK range from historic spa towns to riverside cities.

A full list of the best towns and cities to retire to across the UK includes Canterbury, Harrogate, Newquay and Windsor.

The list, put together by The Mail, was selected using average house prices, local amenities like restaurants and shopping centres, green spaces and historic sites.

Here are the 20 best towns and cities to retire in the UK.

Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury is a city and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kent. The average house price in Canterbury is £329,159. It has many historic sites including a Norman castle and cathedral as well as one of the oldest schools in the country.

Banbury is a historic market town on the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire surrounded by pretty villages. The average house price in Banbury is £286,486. It is just an hour to London by train and is close to the Cotswolds.
