Oldham shooting LIVE: Residents evacuated as shots fired at house

A residential street in Manchester is currently swarming with police after an incident - with locals told to leave their homes.

Officers have descended on a street in Manchester after terrifying reports of a "shooting". Greater Manchester Police was called to Prince Edward Avenue in the early hours. 

Footage has circulated on social media of a suspected firearms discharge on the road, the MEN reports. Police in forensics gear remain at the scene with a probe underway. 

A statement from GMP added: "An investigation is taking place following reports of a firearms discharge at an address on Prince Edward Avenue, Oldham, this morning (7 May 2024).

"Officers were called to the scene at around 1am, where they were able to confirm that a discharge had taken place. Thankfully, nobody was injured, in what is believed to be a targeted attack with no wider risk to the community."

Oldham shooting: What we know so far

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation following a "firearm discharge" in Oldham, Manchester, in the early hours of this morning.

They confirmed that they were called to the scene at 1am, that no-one was injured during the incident, and that there was "no wider risk to the community".

In a subsequent statement, Detective Inspector Clare Harrison said they believed it had been a "targeted attack". 

Furthermore, she added that extra officers were going to be deployed to reassure the local community.

Residents describe how are has changed following incident

Locals living near the scene of the incident have described how they feel about living in the area following the incident. 

One told the MEN that they now wanted to move away and that the area was no longer safe.

Another commented that they would not walk about their local streets late at night.  

Detective Inspector Clare Harrison statement in full

Following the incident last night, Detective Inspector Clare Harrison issued a statement. She said: "We are working at pace to find out the exact circumstances of last night’s events and understanding the timeline.

"We are utilising all the necessary resources available as we investigate the incident, and are working hard to ensure those responsible are brought into custody.

"Any report of a firearms discharge is always shocking and I know that people within the local area will be concerned and worried following this news.

"However, I want to tell the public that we do believe that this is a targeted attack with no wider threat to the public.

"Extra officers will be in the areas for reassurance and I would recommend chatting to them if you have any concerns - they are there for you and will be able to assist with any queries.

"We've continued to tackle gun crime to keep streets safer across Greater Manchester, with 78 firearms recovered in the last year alone.

"The number of shootings has continued to reduce and our specialist teams continue to remove these weapons from the hands of criminals.

"However, when incidents do occur, we act quickly and thoroughly to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Detective Inspector Clare Harrison gives statement following incident

Following the incident, Detective Chief Inspector Clare Harrison from Greater Manchester Police's Oldham District issued a statement. 

They said they were "working to find out the exact circumstances of last night's events and understanding the timeline".

Detective Inspector Harrison added: "I want to tell the public that we do believe that this is a targeted attack with no wider threat to the public.

"Extra officers will be in the areas for reassurance and I would recommend chatting to them if you have any concerns - they are there for you and will be able to assist with any queries."
