Mick wakes coma victim

GRANDFATHER Sam Carter was rocked out of a 10-week coma by his favourite Rolling Stones song – the first single he bought as a teenager.

LIFESAVER Mick Jagger LIFESAVER: Mick Jagger

Retired baker Mr Carter, 60, lost consciousness after contracting severe anaemia but was jolted back to life when (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction blared into his ears.

He awoke from the coma after his wife Eva, 65, took doctors’ advice and started playing him pop music through earphones.

Three days later, his eyes flickered open to Mick Jagger singing Satisfaction, a number one hit in Britain and America in 1965 when Sam, of Stoke-on-Trent, was 17.

He said yesterday: “All I can remember is that when that song came on, it took me right back to when I was a youngster.

“I could remember how excited I was to get hold of the disc down at the record shop.

“I suddenly had a burst of energy and knew I had a lot more life left in me and that’s when I woke up – to the sound of the first song I ever bought.”

Mrs Carter said she had grown frustrated at his lack of progress and played local radio station Signal 2 to him through his headphones at Stoke’s City General Hospital a fortnight ago in a last-ditch attempt to bring him back to consciousness. And to her delight, the music stimulated him, even though he had been given just a 30 per cent chance of surviving.

She admitted yesterday: “I did not really think it would work.

“I couldn’t believe it when he started opening his eyes and looked at me.

“It was as if we had been given another chance.”

Mr Carter, who has three children and six grandchildren, added: “I would love to thank Mick Jagger and the rest of the Rolling Stones.

“I feel they really did help wake me from my coma. I’m feeling champion now.”

In Europe, Satisfaction was initially played only on pirate radio stations because its lyrics were considered too suggestive.
