Clive Myrie discusses Huw Edwards resigning from the BBC

Clive Myrie, 59, has broken his silence on Huw Edwards' decision to step down from his News at Ten slot on the BBC following the Welsh broadcaster's suspension last July.

Since Huw's suspension, various presenters have filled in to host the long-running BBC news programme.

BBC bosses confirmed in recent days that Huw, 62, had stepped down from his high-paying role based on "medical advice".

Huw has been out of the public eye since The Sun published allegations that a BBC presenter had paid a young person for sexually explicit images.

Huw's wife Vicky Flind later named her husband as the BBC broadcaster who had been suspended, stating he would address the allegations "once well enough to do so".

Speaking on Thursday's episode of Good Morning Britain to hosts Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins about Huw's resignation and the atmosphere in the BBC newsroom when it was announced, Clive shared: "This is an absolutely honest response, I have no clue. I haven't been in the office yet, I am in tonight though."

When Richard asked what Clive's personal feelings were about the situation, the Mastermind host replied: "Look, Huw had a distinguished career. He's resigned and that is something that he felt he had to do."

He continued: "It is regrettable, no question, given this royal service and brilliance as a broadcaster. The point now is to move forward.

Richard interjected by asking: "Does that involve you getting his job?"

Clive coyly replied: "Who knows? Who knows? If the news decided that this should be the case, fine."

The BBC issued a statement about Huw stepping down from presenting on Monday (April 22).

It read: "Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.

"The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."

Betfred has shared that Clive is currently at 2/7 odds (77 per cent probability) to replace him.

Betfred's Kayley Cornelius added: “The odds are majorly in Clive Myrie’s favour to fill Huw Edwards' now empty seat."

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays between 6am and 9am on ITV and ITVX.
