Daniel Dubois' injury and recovery time have been disclosed following his fight with Kevin Lerena.

Daniel Dubois pummels opponent into OBLIVION

Daniel Dubois is set for at least six months out of the ring after tearing his ACL in his last fight against Kevin Lerena. Triple D picked himself up off the canvas three times in the opening round to stop Lerena in the third but sustained serious damage to his knee in the process.

After being caught on the top of the head by a vicious backhand, Dubois was sent tumbling to the canvas where he awkwardly fell on his knee. Despite seemingly clearing his head, Dubois struggled to keep his footing as he went down for two counts without receiving a telling blow.

Dubois rallied himself through rounds two and three to stop his South African foe in an ultimate display of heart and courage. After the fight, trainer Shane McGuigan told BT Sport that he believed the Brit had damaged his ACL and he was right.

Talking to Pro Boxing Fans, Shane’s father, Barry provided an update on the injury: “Well, it’s interesting. Dan has a tear on his ACL, and as soon as we got the news that he had a tear on his ACL, suddenly he was offered the fight [with Usyk] – which he can’t have, he can’t box for six months now anyway because of the repair time.”

“He got hit on top of the head the last time, and when he stepped back he tore his ACL and his balance was very badly affected. He had to come back from adversity and he showed that he could do that. He kept his cool. Shane’s advice in the corner was great, kept him nice and relaxed, used his boxing skills, and walked Kevin Lerena onto that right hand and the finish was spectacular.”

Following the fight, Dubois – the WBA mandatory – was ordered to face for his unified heavyweight titles. However, his injury means that he will not be able to take the opportunity until the second half of 2023 at the earliest.

“I don’t think it’s fair to make him fight when he’s unwell, so he’ll need a leave of absence as it were, but he’s ready to fight the top guys,” Barry continued. “I’d rather he fought someone like or rather than Usyk, cause Usyk is a bag of tricks and he’s a southpaw, but I’ve no fear of him fighting any of these guys.”
