F1 ace has revealed his secret knowledge of football, describing veteran as a “legend”. The Sheffield-born striker has scored 174 goals for the Foxes during a 12-year stay in the Midlands and contributed greatly to their fairytale run to the 2015/16 title.

In an interview with The Fast And The Curious podcast, Christian Hewgill revealed his previous football-related chats with F1 drivers. “I tried to get - in an interview with Max Verstappen a long time ago - tried to get him to watch Leicester City, which is my team, and he genuinely seemed really interested because we won the Premier League.”

Sargeant then followed on, adding: “Yeah that year was incredible. I mean Jamie Vardy was absolutely having it off that year!” This response went down well with Hewgill, who was taken aback by his interviewee’s knowledge of the former Premier League winner.

“I mean I can imagine,” Sargeant continued. “He really helped bring you that… I mean I don’t know how you guys did it, but you did it. I mean no one can take that away from you. You guys did it.”

Hewgill then informed Sargeant that Vardy was still fit and firing for Leicester, scoring 18 league goals this season as Leicester overcame a late-season scare to claim the Championship title and secure an instant return to the Premier League. After discovering this news, the Williams star labelled the 37-year-old a “legend”.

While Sargeant was pleased to discover Leicester’s recent success, there was little for the American driver to celebrate on track at his home race on Sunday. The 23-year-old produced a strong recovery drive in the sprint race but was taken out by Kevin Magnussen during the middle portion of the Miami Grand Prix.

That result ensures that the Florida-born racer will head to round seven of the season in Imola at the bottom of the Drivers’ Championship standings with just one finish higher than 17th - a P14 in Jeddah - under his belt.

Speculation continues to whirl regarding a mid-season axing with Williams team principal James Vowles reportedly weighing up the possibility of ousting the American to bring in Mercedes’ star prospect Kimi Antonelli on a two-year deal, although for now, Sargeant has a chance to save his ailing F1 career.
