Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp explains picking Daniel Sturridge over Roberto Firmino
JURGEN KLOPP has revealed why he chose to start with Daniel Sturridge rather than Roberto Firmino in their Champions League opener against Paris Saint-Germain this evening.
It’s the first time Sturridge has started this season having only played 20 minutes from substitute appearances.
Despite Sturridge’s lack of minutes, Klopp is adamant the Englishman is ready to step up in place of Firmino.
"Yesterday Roberto Firmino could not look properly but today he has improved,” Klopp told BT Sport.
“He is an option on the bench.

“Daniel Sturridge is in top shape and I'm really happy with that.
“His place in the side is deserved while we have the option of bringing on Firmino."
Sturridge fell down the pecking order at Liverpool last season and ended up being shipped out on loan to West Brom.
Upon returning to Liverpool in the summer it was expected his future would be away from the club.
