The 28-year-old had entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and some within the club were concerned the Spaniard was contemplating a move away from the club, as negotiations had dragged on for more than two years.
However, those doubts were put to bed on Monday when the De Gea penned a new four-year contract, with the option of a fifth, which will keep him at the club until at least 2023.
Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson brought De Gea to Manchester back in 2011 for £18.9m from Atletico Madrid.

And the Spaniard has gone on to be a fans favourite as the goalkeeper, who is now in his ninth season in England, has amassed 102 clean sheets in 280 Premier League appearances for the club, while also winning the club’s Player of the Year award in four of the last six seasons.
However, coming off a poor display for Spain during the World Cup, De Gea saw several mistakes creep into his game last season, which saw the keeper being at fault for numerous goals in United’s last campaign.
Following the departure of Jose Mourinho last year De Gea had questioned the club’s ability to compete for major titles and after losing his spot as Spain’s undisputed number one keeper to Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, he had question whether a change of club might help his situation.
However, according to the Metro, De Gea signed a new deal because he felt personally indebted to Solskjaer.

During De Gea’s difficult period the Norwegian’s support was unwavering.
The keeper felt he deserved a salary that reflected his status as a senior member of the United squad and is now the highest paid goalkeeper after signing a reported £375,000-a-week contract.
Despite making mistakes at the end of last season and against Crystal Palace in this campaign, the report claims De Gea was reassured by Solskjaer’s commitment to his wellbeing during the difficult period for him.
And he was also further buoyed by Solskjaer’s decision to make him captain in the absence of Ashley Young, during the club’s tour of Australia , with the decision putting him ahead of other United stars such as Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof.
After agreeing to the deal De Gea admitted he was ready to help Untied win silverware again.
“It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour,” he told United’s website.

“Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.
“As one of the senior players in the squad, I want to support and lead in any way that I can to assist the younger players, so they know what it means to play here.
“I still feel that I have so much more to achieve at the club and I truly believe that Manchester United can build on the club’s tradition of success and reward our fans for their support.
“I am committed to continue repaying the fans for all of the care that they’ve shown me during the good times and the bad.”
