Manchester United fans were provoked over Casemiro’s red card against Crystal Palace as new footage has caught Eagles midfielder Will Hughes shushing a section of the Old Trafford crowd with his finger to his lips and cupping his ears as he walks towards the edge of the pitch. Casemiro was dismissed with 20 minutes of Saturday’s Premier League clash remaining after putting his hands around Hughes’ neck during a mass brawl between both sets of players.

United controlled the game against Palace and went ahead after just seven minutes as Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty after a VAR check showed Hughes had blocked a cross from Marcus Rashford with his hand. Rashford then doubled the hosts’ advantage just after the hour mark as he turned in a cross from Luke Shaw.

The Red Devils were making light work of their south London opponents and appeared to be heading for another easy three points as the match wore on. But the showdown took a dark turn courtesy of a melee when Eagles midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp left United winger Antony in a bundle next to the advertising boards at the side of the pitch following a heavy challenge.

Players from the opposing sides confronted each other as the sparks flew. And after consulting VAR, referee Andre Marriner gave Casemiro his marching orders.

United fans were unhappy to lose their influential Brazilian midfielder, who is now set to face a ban and miss back-to-back Premier League clashes with Leeds as well as his side’s showdown with Leicester. But Hughes appeared to lack any sort of concern for Casemiro after the red card was displayed as he goaded the Red Devils fans while keeping a straight face.

The sending-off threatened to derail the home side as Schlupp pulled a goal back for Palace six minutes later. But United hung on to claim all three points as they moved to within eight points of top-flight leaders Arsenal, who were defeated 1-0 by Everton earlier in the day.

“First of all, we have to deal with it and we will do, but it is not right,” United manager Erik ten Hag said after the match as he addressed Casemiro’s dismissal. “It shouldn't have happened. And last week, VAR doesn't do anything about the tackle [by Andy Carroll on Christian Eriksen in the FA Cup]. But this was avoidable and because in this incident there have to be consequences and they are inconsistent. And that is not right - that is not fair against us.

“We have to think about [appealing]. But be fair, we have seen when you're freezing [the frame in the video], Casemiro is crossing the line. But many more players were crossing the line there. We get also some warnings about our team reacting like this and I think you have to do it, you have to protect each other.”
