Northampton defender fires pot-shot at Manchester United star: We coped comfortably!
GABRIEL ZAKUANI claims he and defensive partner Zander Diamond remained untroubled by Wayne Rooney for much of their EFL Cup defeat to Manchester United.
“It was a massive challenge but I thought Zander and I coped quite comfortably with Rooney for the majority of the game," Zakuani told the Northampton Chronicle.
And Michael Carrick gave them the lead within 17 minutes, following up a free-kick from the England skipper.
But an Alex Revell penalty ensured the visitors did have it all their own way against a side ranked 48 places below them in the league.
“We rattled them and we had the momentum,” Zakuani added.
“We kept them under pressure and it shows how far you’ve come when you’re disappointed to lose to one of the biggest club in the world.
“We’re happy with the account we gave of ourselves but we’re disappointed as well.”
